Discussion:
mailing list deprecation

Hey everybody,

Given that the mailing list is rather quiet, at best, I think we may be
better served by just moving more specific questions like this to Stack
Overflow. From what I've seen, questions there tend to be answered more
quickly and thoroughly (and it provides rewards for those who do answer
stuff).

As such I say we just deprecate this email list. I'll leave it on google
groups for the historical info, but would encourage any/all new questions
to just go the stack overflow route.

Please let me know if you have any concerns or issues with this change. I
don't expect anything bad and hope it will improve the experience for all
of us and our users.

Thanks!

Hello Wesley,

I'd suggest that the mailing list be there and kept alive. Its easy to
follow up on fog announcements via the mailing list, than looking it up on
SO or the github page.

Good point. I guess more specifically I would say it is no longer
recommended as the avenue for asking questions, stackoverflow works much
better for that. We may still use it for announcements if/when that makes
sense. I am somewhat better about tweets from @fog for most announcements
than anything else presently (ie releases). I'm certainly open to feedback
on how we can improve on that though.
Thanks,
wes

Hi Wes,

Since the email list is going to be deprecated, what is the best forum to
discuss fog design issues? A github issue?

Yeah, I think issues provide a good/persistent/easily locatable place for
design discussions. In usage it seems like we gravitate toward this
already, so I thought formalizing might simplify a bit. Among other things
it also simplifies formatting due to markdown and facilitates linking to
other issues and even linking directly to sections of code. So, yeah, seems
like just using issues may better serve us. We can perhaps think about
adding a `discussion` tag or something to better segregate if that would
help.

We can also certainly keep the mailing list alive and well if that is what
folks really want, just seems like we hardly use it in practice, so
reducing the channels that need to be watched/kept up to date seemed like a
good plan. As always I welcome feedback/discussion so we can do the right
thing.

Thanks,
wes
